The Olathe Kids Marathon was created to promote health and fitness in children. The marathon program is structured to allow children, kindergarten through sixth grade, to complete a full 26.2 mile marathon at a pace that is fun and safe for their growing bodies one mile at a time.

The Greater Kansas City YMCA has developed a training program that will take the Kid's Marathon participant from zero to 26.2 total miles in 16 weeks. The first 25 miles will be, ran or walked in quarter, half or one mile increments, on a safe secure route designated by parents, coaches, mentors or teachers. The final 1.2 miles of the marathon will be completed on race day, Saturday, April 10, 2010. This year's event will be held at the Garmin facility at 151st and Ridgeview Streets with an age/grade wave start beginning at 7:30 AM. The Olathe YMCA is allowing children participating in the marathon and their families to use the YMCA for free on Sundays.

While training, mileage tracking will be on the "honor" system and kids will get the most and be prepared for the marathon by tracking their miles honestly. Daily record keeping is a task that kids and parents can chart to monitor progress toward their mileage goals. A PDF version of the training program and tracking chart can be found on the Olathe Marathon's website www.olathemarathon.com under the "Kid's Marathon" button.

  • Parents/Guardians, due to safety reasons, you will be required to wear a bib/runners number to accompany your child on the course and each child may have one parent accompany them. Every child who enters the event will be given two bibs with the same number. The child who is entered will wear one and the other is for the parent/guardian who will be accompanying them. For lost parent/child reasons, the child and adult bibs will both contain the child's information.

The generosity of the event's sponsors allows the Olathe Kid's Marathon to continue as a no cost to participate event; however each participant must be pre-registered for the event. To register for the program, please fill out the Registration form (also found on the website) and have a parent or guardian sign the release of liability and mail to:
